Today I visited the island fortress of Corregidor. It was the scene of two battles in WW 2. The first when the Americans surrendered in early 1942 and the second when the Japanese lost in 1945. Their code of Bushido did not allow surrender so nearly 6500 troops committed suicide by jumping off a cliff, or running headlong into rifle fire.
Bataan, the peninsula to the west was the spot of the Death March when 10,000 Allied troops were killed while being marched to a prison camp. The Japanese felt that if you surrendered, you were not considered human and could be killed.
The tour was full of young children and I wonder what they got out of it. It was fun playing on the guns, I guess It’s very peaceful there now with only ruins, museums, and memorials here,
